Default Service engine light and wont start

Hello,
A few weeks ago, my 2001 SLE began acting up. When I started it, it revved up on the initial crank, but when it was supposed to rev down and maintain idle, it sputterd slightly around idle and then went straight to dead. It would always start on the next try.
Yesterday, it would not start at all. It sounds like it has a strong starter, but just sits there rrrr, rrrr, rrrr!
The service engine light is on, but I do not know how to manipulate the pins on the OBD connector to get it to flash some codes at me.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tony in Louisiana

I dont think you can manipulate it, cant you go to autozone or something for the codes, you definately need the codes read.

Don't quote me but I think you need a code reader on the newer cars.

yes you do.

also, the check engine light will always be on if the car is not running and the key is on. Check for spark and fuel pressure.. Did you have any warning signs before the problem
