Default Stereo/ECC - Steering Wheel Buttons

Hey everyone, I have a 1989 Bonneville LE, and it has a CD player from a 97 Bonneville, that fit with no harness modification at all... I dont know how, but it did... And the car has Electronic Climate control. My problem is the steering wheel buttons, for the whole 5 years I have had the car, they have worked a total of 3 seconds, and then never again, and i think this was a fluke.
i know that they are supposed to light up when the dash lights are on (headlights too) but they dont, and I was wondering if there is a way to test if its the control module in the steering wheel thats bad, or if its wiring in the steering column, and even if the controls wont work for the stereo, id still like it to light up, and to be able to use the controls for the ECC. Thanks

We're going to need someone with the Factory Service manual for your year on this one. Just don't expect the wheel controls to work with the 97 HU.

While we wait for someone with an FSM for 89 to check in here, can you put your year and trim level (along with any mods) in your sig? It'll help us help you in the future.

Agreed on the FSM. However I think the radio controls would work if pinned to the proper place on the connector at the radio. GM didn't change things like the resistance to control the functions very often.

In my 95 the control wire was on say Pin A and in the 97 it was Pin C. Find the pinout on your year and I can tell you where it should be for the 97 radio.

Default pins

My issue is that the buttons dont work, at all.. not for the climate control even, and if i can get them working, then the pinouts for the 97 HU would be great info to have! thanks

Right... we need someone with the book to diagnose the buttons.
