I am having the dreaded fuel pump cut out problem while driving problem. The windows and door locks are also non-functional when this happens as well.
I have learned from other threads on this topic that it is a bad ground causing this.
I want to fix this ground and I have found that wierd black ground bar plug thing under the driver'* side carpet. About 8 black wires go into this strange black plug.

QUESTION: #1 Can I pull each individual wire from this plug and check/clean any corrosion causing the problems? Or are these wires not supposed to come out? If they are supposed to come out do I just yank them out or do I need a special tool?

QUESTION #2: Where can I find the acutal ground wire for the fuel pump so I can directly ground the bastard right to the frame so I do not have to worry about connections in the strange black plug corroding again?

QUESTION #3: Where does the strange black plug ultimately ground itself to the car? I've never seen a ground system like this before!

QUESTION #4: Why does the strange black plug have a long metal bar on its opposite side which is covered by a plastic cap? I mean, why place a plastic cap over it if it is a ground? If it touches the body metal, so what? It'* just a ground.

I'll let an Electrical gearhead answer the bulk of your questions. But, I found the hard way that there'* another grounding buss on the passenger side as well. It, too, is just as suspetible to corrosion as the driver'* side.

I had the same issue here. If your 96 is wired like my 95, then I should be able to help. Your fuel tank ground runs behind your back seat, runs to the drivers side, along the floor up to that grounding buss. Which is a GREAT place to put that. Especially if you are a Northerner.(snow ice salt mixture not good in this spot)

If your bar is all corroded, pull it out and sand it down with sand paper. Try to find something that will clean the contacts inside the connector also. Reinsert it back into the holder and try your windows and locks. I found out the hard way about this problem. I was mostly worried about the fuel pump, and I ended up working backwards. Found that if I ran a seperate ground to the fuel pump, it worked. Thats when I started working backwords. Of course, I already pulled the fuel tank, and pump. Anyway, let us know what happened after you cleaned that part.

They are all wired pretty much the same.

My bar plug on the driver'* side does not look corroded from what I can see (this is after I unwrapped the cap in electrical tape and popped the cap off). Maybe it is corroded inside?

You say to pull the bar out? How is this done properly?
Do you mean getting a pair of pliers and pulling on the metal bar or pulling each of the 8 black wires out individually (if these 8 wires are designed to come out in the first place?)?

Yes, use pliers to pull the bar out. I could show you a pic of what mine looked like, but still searching for it....

Only thing I did was clean up the bar and stick it back in. It has worked fine since then. And that was almost 3 years ago. I started this thread back then...

WOW! That was really corroded!!!

Mine does not look THAT bad. In fact, mine looks fine from the outside.
Maybe once I pull the bar I'll find some corrosion inside.
If no corrosion is evident I'll have to resort to the tactic of making my own ground for the fuel pump. Ugh!
