Default EGR Help

I am getting code 1404 (EGR). First, I tried cleaning the EGR, but the code came back. Then I replaced the EGR, but the code still came back. I have tried to follow the wiring to check for shorts and connections, but have found nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm guessing this is electrical.

Suggestions ?

DTC P1404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Closed Position Performance

I would want to read what the FSM says about this code and start with the diagnostics of it.

Without reading that information I would suggest checking the metal tubes from the exhaust to EGR and EGR to lower intake manfold for any cracking or leaks. These are typically found right at the edge where the tube is held to the manifold.

Bill - I have pulled the tubes and there were no cracks or restrictions. Sorry, I should have said that in my initial post. I also cleaned the ports in the TB and intake manifold.

This is a link to the diagnostic information for that code. Unfortunately, most of it requires a scan tool. It does tell you which areas to clean.
P1404
This one is for the connector to show you what each does.
EGR Connector I'd start by checking the 5 volt reference.

I figured this would eventually require a scan tool, but I don't have one, or know anyone that has one.

Is there an affordable scan tool out there that is useful?

I guess I need a bi-directional scan tool that I can command the EGR to open.

If you have a laptop, AutoEnginuity is one option for a scan tool.

Since Yeller M&M posted the link... the tubes don't make any sense to check. Good to know they are solid though.

First step would be to check that wire for a 5 volt..also check the grounding.

I tested the harness connections at the EGR with a multimeter and I got voltage readings (not sure what I was looking at since I am electronically challanged when it comes to vehicles).

The next day, I started the car and the MIL was off. I did a scan just to see if there were any pending codes and now I get 1404, 403 (EGR - Solenoid Control Circuit) and 405 (EGR- Position Sensor Circuit Low Voltage ). These are not pending codes, they are in fault.

How are these codes showing on the scanner, but the MIL is off?

I know the bulb is not burnt out, because it comes on during the key on cycle.

Did I somehow blow something when I was testing the connector? I pulled every fuse in both fuse blocks and there were no blown fuses.

Most codes of a non-damaging or mildly important nature will take two consecutive start cycle failures to illuminate the mil. The usual for clearing the MIL is three consecutive start cycles with the tests passing.

I am aware that it usually takes 2 start cycles to light the MIL, that is why I cannot figure out why it is not lit. I have been through about 8 start cycles and still no MIL.

The 1404 code has been there for several months and the MIL has been on, but now it is out, even with 2 more codes on top of that.
