Default Battery, alternator, or starter??

If this is in the wrong forum, please feel free to relocate it to the proper section. I apologize in advance if it is.

Went out to start my 98 SE (formerly my Dad'*) this morning, opened the car door, all the interior lights bright as usual, turned the key, all the lights went out and no crank. Dead as a doornail. Checked cables and cleaned them, looked for any loose wires anywhere else. Opened the door to get back in, interior lights on again and bright, and as soon as i turn the key, everything goes dead.

Battery and starter have both been replaced within the last twelve months. Any ideas???

Thanks,
John

Did you remove the rubber boot & check for corrosion where the two battery cables come together?

In case anyone is interested or has the same problem in the future, it was a dead battery.
