Volt gadge mystery
Im having an odd problem with the volt meter on my 1999 sse bonnevillewheni start the car ( and it doesnt matter if its hot or cold ) the gaudge slowly goes up to its normal operating leverl, 14, once warm it goes to the middle which is 12 i belive, if i turn onto a street or parking lot the meter drops to the red side of the meter and things dim out, once the car started to stutter and almost stalled out on me. This also happens when there is no accessroies on.
Hear is what ive done, checked positive and negitive battery cables from the battery to the ground and alt, checked the boots on both cables by taking them off. installed a brand new battery, installed brand new belt, installed brand new alt, did a meter test on the alt from the alt , when starting the car the meter shows it hanging at 11.6 volts then going to 13.8
any advice or a solution ? id hate to ship it to the auction since this car is one of the nicest ive owned in many years many thanks in advance

Take a look at this, https://www.gmforum.com/electrical-133/adding-sense-wire-your-alternator-278806/ This might correct your problem.

One thing that was not mentioned in general was battery cables. I have heard complaints of corrosion happening under the rubber boots, unseen until they are cut apart. I also didn't see that the cables were replaced. That would be a good place to go from here. I suspect that the gauge in the dash is correct, we now need to find what is causing it.

when i checked the battery cabbles i took the boots off both the positive and negtive cables, i cleaned both cables and replaced the bolts that connect the cables into the battery with new ones from GM. the cable that runs from the battery to the back of the alt was also taken off, cleaned and put back on, all connections to both the battery, the ground and the cable that runs from the back of the alt were re checked for tightness. That was the first things i checked rjolly since i figured it had to be a loose connector or somthing simnple but it doesnt look to be so in my case.
Danthurs ill show that to my freind and see what he thinks. Thankyou both for the fast replys
