Default Replacing Ignition on 93 SSEI

Ditchboy is trying to change out his ignition on the 93 SSEi ..... he found the two white wires (no orange sleeve) and one was cut. I told him that it was likely cut on purpose to bypass VATS since I know that the previous owner said he had bypassed VATS

So....is it safe to tell him to replace the ignition without hooking up the white wires on the new ignition (assuming they are there....and they should be encased in an orange sleeve.)

I did some searching and read up on this thread http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...place+ignition

and found that is may be a dirty key, a resistor that doesn't match the key within the same ohms... or the ignition. I don't remember what the security light did when he turned the key and nothing happened. However his problem is intermittant. When it won't start, he waits about 5 mins and then it does. He did get a new resistor put in at a garage....he thinks they boned him for $75 because the car has started acting up again.

Other problems he has... he can't lock the doors using the power switch because the security system will go off when you unlock the doors and open the doors. Have to disconnect the battery to stop it from occuring. And he had a fuel-delivery-like issue too but he changed his fuel pump and I don't know if that fixed it or not.

I told him to search this forum when he first had a problem.... but NOoooooo....he'* got to do it his way and rip out the ignition. He doesn't know what he'* doing either... and I'm the one who has to go pick him butt up from work two days in a row. Needless to say...I guess I should learn to not be available to him.

He needs to make his own mistakes, which is why I haven't asked for help for him (in a while). But now he'* calling asking me to "ask the club for me because I'm at work".

If the lock cylinder wasn't binding up, then yes..he'* probably making a big mistake by swapping it out.

The resistance is either close to being off or the wires are rubbing somethere causing it to be off.

He'* having a VATS issue.

Have meter will travel.

Tracy - I know very little about Vats & the security system but I'm willing to try to help. I can bring a meter & have access to wiring diagrams. Did he start removing the ignition switch already?

The original switch is still on right now. He did not yet remove it...but he has removed the airbag and steering wheel. He won't get home from work until after 8pm...and plans on doing it tonight - he works on the weekends. He'* got it at his dad'* house - which is around the corner from me on Rt 78 (you pass it on your way to my house).

That'* awesome of you to offer assistance... if you are available to shoot down tonight that late, pm me your cell number or just show up. Thank you again for the offer.

8pm! That'll cost you a beer. I can most likely do that. I'll give you a call around 7pm & let you know for sure.

I met up with Ditchboy Saturday morning. All we did was reconnect the battery & reinsert the fuse that he had removed. His car started right up several times. Maybe he just had a poor connection at the battery. Below is a wiring diagram for the 92/93 starting circuit. You can see that the starter won't crank the engine if VATS is not working properly. I left him a homemade test light ( 2 wires soldered to a 12 volt light bulb) . If the problem returns he can hook one end of the test light to the small wire (ppl on the diagram) going to the starter solenoid & ground the other. The light will come on when the key is in the start position. This lets us know if power is getting to the starter solenoid or not. Worked like a charm.

Ted...great idea. I'm sure many others can benefit from the same.

(I had that same test light for years...they work great..lol)
