Has anyone installed a solid state blinker relay for their bonnie?

Well, it wouldn't be a relay, just a solid-state flasher unit... I haven't installed one myself, no. What are you after here? If you want a quieter-sounding turn-signal flasher, take it out of its clip (on or near the steering column support brace) and let it dangle free by its wires; that will quiet its clicking a lot. You'll need to remove the lower hush panel below the steering column to get access.

If for some reason you're looking for a higher-capacity unit (e.g. for trailer towing), there are heavy-duty flasher units available from places like J.C. Whitney.

Just to make it silent. But...do our turn signals run off a solid state timer, or is it a heat/current sensing mechinism? What I'm getting at is if I bought a solid state relay and replaced the current relay, would it still blink with the correct frequency???

To make it silent, disconnect it from the clip, and wrap it in foam and tape Cheaper and easier.

The solid state should work but you will have to gut the existing relay out, look for one with an adjustable time base. If you do go with one, solder your connections for a better install.

The frequency of the blinking is dependent on current, more current drawn, more heat produced on the inside which turns it off till it cools then allows current to flow again and repeat the cycle. I know this because when i have the trailer hooked up, the duration of the blink is affected greatly, even more pronounced at nighttime. For this reason i went to autozone and got a blinker with solid state timing controlling the frequency and duration of the blink. Now my blink is consistent no matter what is hooked up the the blinker lighting system. Hope this helps
