voltage gauge and alternator problem
Hi,
About a week ago, when I started my 93 bonneville in the morning, the voltage meter pointed to 12, the check gages light stayed on and I heard "dong, dong" alter. After about 5 minutes driving, the voltage meter raised to the normal 14. the check gages light went off.
It has been like that every time the car is started in the cold. it starts fine if the car is still warm.
What could be the problem? Thanks.

Posts like a Ricer Type-R
I think the best action would be to disconnect the batter cables and pull the boots off. I bet you find corrosion and become about the 15th victim of the same problem this month on this Forum.

while you are doing that, you might as well start the car and then disconnect the battery cables. If the car dies, your alternator is bad and then you can come to the bonneville gear section and sign up for the high ouput alternator group buy next thursday $185.00 plus shipping

So Again... DO NOT disconnect the battery while the car is running...
If you want to do this to an Old School Chevy 350 V8 that has 0 electronics then be my guest...

Absolutely agree! Another thing to remember is that the alternator puts out an alternating current, not direct current like the old generators. The diodes in the alternator then turns that ac current into pulsating direct current, which at peak will be much higher than when it is smoothed out by the battery. Electronic circuits despise alternating or pulsating direct current as a supply.
