I am in Brantford Ontario. We have a Canadian Tire here but no Napa auto parts. I will have a look at Canadian Tire the next time I am out there. God knows I spend half my damn life there it seems for one thing or another! *LOL*

I use my Canadian Tire money to buy anything that I need there if I have enough. I get my gas there so it doesn't take long driving this gas guzzler!!!!

I will give it a shot, if it saves me some money what the heck, it sounds easy enough to do!

If you like I'll try to post some pics to clean the remote buttons. I can't guarantee when though.

Cleaning Key FOB (with membrane pad):

1) Open Key FOB using the trunk key or large screwdriver. Look for widened slot in plastic seam.

2) Remove and separate rubber membrane.

3) Use a good contact cleaner. MAF cleaner is really handy to keep around.

4) Use a soft cloth to gently rub surfaces clean. You can be surprisingly hard on the black pads of the rubber membrane. I resorted to using a fine sandpaper on those (400 grit wet/dry).

DON'T be rough on the copper contacts!

5) Reassemble, then test. For some reason I had to reassemble mine several times before I could get good contact. Also, you may need to press and hold the lock/unlock at the same time for about 8 seconds until you hear the vehicle beep. This synchronizes the remote.

6) If the remote still doesn't work, try Danthur'* method to reprogram the remotes. You need all your remotes at hand. His instructions will work for the years given. If they don't, you probably do need new batteries, or a new remote.

So do I use this spray on both the rubber and the electronics inside, like all the wiring etc? I don't want to do something and blow up the remote and render it useless in the end!!

Good pictures though, I will pick up some of that stuff at Crappy Tire tomorrow, I will be out anyhow!

Yes, spray the rubber membrane and the copper contacts shown in the picture. Wipe both the rubber membrane and the copper contacts, then spray again.

You could probably dunk the entire remote into a glassfull of this stuff, but I'd take the battery out first if you were to do that.

Maybe this weekend I'll post some pics on how to clean the MAF with the same stuff. You just need to buy one inexpensive tool, and you'll notice improved performance.

I went back to the dealership on my way to Canadian Tire and talked to them again. They told me that the whole remote is fried and even showed me where the wires will not solder together. So the cleaner would be of no use to me.

I than went out to a wreckers and bought a FOB and took it to the dealership and it too was not any good so I am going to resort to buying off that website that is advertising on here. Just have to give them a call to make sure it can be shipped to Canada. I think that is the easiest way to do it really. Buy one and than the worries are gone!

Thanks for the help though! I got someone else who is interested in the remotes from my 98 totalled car so maybe I can sell those and pay for part of the cost of the new ones!

If only the 98 FOB'* were the same as the 97 but alas, no luck. Story of my life!

do you know what the numbers are on te remotes for the 97. I think I still have one from my 97 that is brand new. We just found the keys the other day, and the car is gone! PM me the numbers to check

Thanks to Scott above, I now have an FOB that is not only good but programmed! It is amazing how easy it is and can't believe that dealers charge that much for such an easy job to do!

Hi, I've got the same issue, but with a twist: There are no metal contacts in Ports 4 and 8. I've no idea why, but what do I do under those circumstances? I know the remote itself is functional and matches my vehicle.
