is there a way to bypass the resistor in the ignition key?

Yep. You'll first need an ohm meter to read the resistance in the key.

Next, you'll need to find a resistor or a combination of resistors that come close to matching the resistance you measured. VATS has a tollerance of +/- 5%.

Then you need to locate the VATS harness under the dash. It is typically an orange "tube" of sorts mingling with the other heavy gauge ignition wires. Cut the tube in an easy to work location. When you strip the orange coating off, you'll find two very small wires in there.


You will then need to connect your matched resistor(*) to the wires. Some people solder the connections. I don't. The wires are very small and are more like string than wire. I use these little yellow butt connectors available at the Shack. This will permanently bypass VATS

Thanks can't see spending $50 on a key.
