Default Both cooling fans are running all the time.

Hi All,

This just started happening the other day. The two cooling fans behind the radiator run all the time now when the car is running. Even when I first start the car in the morning and the engine is cold. They also run if I just turn the ignition key to the point just before starting. All gauges read normal, so I assume this is some sort of electrical problem. Any help or guidance would be appreciateed.

Thanks so much,
Leif

Leif, we need to know if you have the manual or electronic climate control unit. We also need to know if you hav the ECC, is it in Auto? If it is, the fans are supposed to be on if the AC is selected, regardless of temp settings.

Many of us use this trick to force both fans on High in the summer.

After we get those two things cleared up and answered, we'll move onto the fan control module if it applies.

I have a manual climate control unit. I have the rotary dials for fan speed, temp control and mode control. Currently all of the dials are in their left most position (lowest fan speed, lowest temp position and mode in off position)

You're in CT? Can you attend NEBF? That'll be your best help at this point. But I'd GUESS right now the resistor pack for the fans is shorted. It'* not hard to get to, even if it sounds like it is.

Remove the maxifuse relay center cover and loosen the relay block, lift it up, and remove the small cover on above the heater core.

Step 1 in this Techinfo article describes access:
http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...e=article&k=63
(good time to follow the rest of that article also).

Check your blower resistor pack with an ohmmeter.

You should have:
.16 ohms a to b
.70 ohms a to c
3.07 ohms a to d
2.37 ohms c to d
2.91 ohms b to d

The circuit looks like this:

If it doesn't shoot out like that, replace the module. My bet is that it'* bad. There is no harm other than annoyance right now.

Your local parts store should have or be able to get one for under 20 bucks if you need it. Rock Auto has it for your car for $11.75 if you need it. Make sure you don't get the MODULE for the cars with Electronic Climate Controls. That'* about 100 bucks.

Ignore my post above. I got trapped in post hell between two topics. I'll delete it when I figure out where I meant to put it.
