Turn Signal Problem....Maybe the switch?

Turn Signal Problem....Maybe the switch?
Well about a week ago, I thought I noticed that my turn signals were working a little slower. Then one day they just stopped working. I figured that it was the flasher/relay. Well one day I took the car out and out of habit I hit the turn signal and it worked. Then it started to go out again. So before going to the store to find a new flasher, I thought I would try the hazards to verify the problem. Sure enough the hazards work great.
So the only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong with the switch in the steering column. Any ideas of what the problem could be? Last night I tried to remove the switch, but I wasn't quite sure how to get the plastic pieces off without breaking them. But then again it was getting dark and only spent a few minutes on it.
BTW, I have 91. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

The trun signals and the hazard lights use different flashers. Swap them to test. If yhe hazard lights blink slowly like the turn signals then the falsher needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the replies. I have a question about the bulbs. If the bulbs are toast, why would the flashers work? Also, how come it was slow and every once and awhile? I'm not questioning you, I'm just trying to understand.
As for the other question, where are the flashers? Unfortunately I don't have a manual or a book.
Thanks for all the input guys

Oxidized contacts or a filament broken in such a way the it makes contact sometimes.
It'* alot easier to check the bulbs and make sure they're right than it is to trace the wiring or look for a flasher...
Flashers are under the dash near the steering column.
