I've added an engine start button into my switch panel and have the lighting for it wired up but now I want to make it functional

I looked through my service manuals til I had a headache from reading them trying to find the connector view for the ignition switch because I need to splice a wire into the factory "Crank" wire but i can't find it anywhere

does anyone see a problem with me running a ground wire to the coil of the starter relay, I would add a relay that would energize when the car is turned to ON so that the starter coluld only be engaged then

or if someone knows where I can find the crank wire inside the dash that would work too

Wow literally 2 seconds after I submitted this thread I flipped to a random page in my FSM and it was the page with the diagram I was looking for all day lol

And once you finish..you are going to post the answer right?

Of course Bill, and a few pics, a video, and some instructions, only difference could be the wire you need to tap into with the different years, the pushbuttons are basically the same from the ones I've seen on Ebay except for the button face which is personal preference

ok so this is a very simple job to do, took me about 15 minutes from the time I start pulling the trim off til I had it running and I had to check the wires really quick too.

So start out by getting yourself a pushbutton start, about $30 on Ebay
I got one with chrome trim and a light up button


Then start by pulling the knee bolster off by just pulling on the bottom a bit then pull all of it directly towards you and it will come off, just set it in the back seat


Then you need to take the bottom trim piece off, there are 2 screws and a little push in clip, just pull it down and out of the way, you want to disconnect the little connector for the footwell light really fast so you can get the whole trim piece out of the way

Here is the trim out of the way (that is all extra wiring just hanging there, not stock)


Now if you look up into the space there you will see 2 connectors, a BLACK and a GREY one, you want the grey one, just slide it off the little tab to have better access to it


now you need to splice into the CRANK signal wire, you can do this however you would like; scotch lock, strip and splice or however you want (this is just the signal line so you don't need much power)
Here is the diagram in the FSM, the wire you need is all underlined and the pins on the connector, that is how it looks when you pull the connectors apart


Once you get your wire spliced in go ahead and put everything back by reversing the process


As for the switch, you can mount it anywhere you like and is easy to get to. For the one I used the lighting for the button was seperate from actual closing of the switch, you can wire the lighting to a switched source when the car is on or parking lights or not at all

Then take the wire you spliced into the CRANK signal wire and run it to one side of the the pushbutton switch then on the other side you need a switched source that would preferably only be live when the ignition is in the ON posistion

Finally once you have it all wired up and cleaned up put your key in, turn it to ON and push the button and tada engine starts, and if the button is too annoying to push all the time turning the key to START will still work too

I know that little switch panel where the cubby used to be looks like crap, I sanded and painted it right after this, much more shiny

Well I want the pics to be smaller, I didn't realize when I uploaded them so is there an easy way to do that, other than that I'm pretty happy except for adding what wire to draw the power from for the lighting and switch

if you accidently hit the button while the car was running would it be the same thing as turning the key to the start position and enguage the starter motor?
