Default 4 Way Flasher/Turn Signal

Hello,

I have a 91 Bonneville. I have had it for about a year and a half. i hadnt been driving it for a while because a bought a newer car. Recently, i went to re-register it, and i had to have it inspected. My mechanic told me it would be about 400 dollars to get it to pass inspection. it need new emergency brake cables, left front tire, and a new four way flasher. Just before i took it to be inspected, i noticed that the right turn signal wasnt working, when i would click it on, the light in the dash would just stay on. it wouldnt blink and didnt make a clicking noice. the left turn signal was working fine, so i thought maybe its just a bulb, however i put the four ways on and they were working. It gets stranger, when i had the headlights and four ways on, the dash would blink, "Headlight" and the car would start chiming a warning. my mechanic said it needed a new four way unit, i drove it home, discouraged, and the right turn signal starting working again, and it wouldnt work with the flashers and headlight on. Then i noticed that when the headlights and flashers are on, the two front turn signals,(by the bumper), werent flashing together at the same time, they were flashing opposite. It sounds to me like theres a short somewhere, or a bad fuse. How hard is this to fix, if i did it myself? i was told i would have to take the steering column off. I need it to pass inspection, not to mention the emerg. brake cable which no one ever uses. Thanks again guys....

Sort of confusing - I would try replacing both of the turn signal/parking lamp bulbs with new ones.

Sounds more like a bad ground to me, have seen them do all kinds of odd things like the oil pressure jumping when the turn signals flash. Are three main grounds you need to check - battery to engine, battery to chassis, and chassis to dashboard. This is particularly a problem where road salt is used in the winter as it enhances corrosion.

A commn symptom is things changing when you turn the headlamps on or the heater on high.

In the past I have just run a #12 or #14 wire from the negative side of the battery to a ground post on the dash, if it is a bad ground this may fix.

Did you try a new flasher, yet? I had something similar and a flasher fixed it.

I personally dont know what the exact problem is, so i'll probably end up taking it back to my mechanic to have him fix it. Right now im busy trying to install a new emergency brake cable system, so it will pass inspection. Do you have to pull the entire dash out of the car to fix the flasher? i heard the steering column needs to be taken off, luckily it doesnt have an air bag. Besides, the brake cable and flasher issue, it needs a new front tire to pass inspection. since im only going to be using it for one more winter, then im geting rid of it, i'll just by a cheap one, i know the car needs an alignment, but why bother now. Also, I noticed a few weeks ago, that theres a crack in the windshield, near the passengers side, its about 10-11 inches long, starts from the bottem and goes up about 10 inches. ive noticed is has gotten bigger, then what it first was. Do you think it will keep spreading? Anything i can do about it?

Regarding your windshield...yes it will continue to grow...sorry man

Now, for your flashers..don't they work on the same relay system as the turn signals? So..I would check all the marker bulbs then check the relay...bearing in mind...do your turn signals work? If so, then it has to be a bad ground or whatever has been suggested in this thread

Goin' off memory here, but I think the flasher is under the steering column about where your left knee would be. Remove the access panel and viola!
