Default Compass Calibration.

I have a 2004 GXP and ever since I took delivery I've had to recalibrate the compass frequently. Sometimes several times a week, other times it will be okay for a few weeks. All my speakers are stock orignals. I haven't added anything which would alter magnetic fields in the area of the module (or anywhere in the car for that matter).

I've checked the integrity of the wiring at the compass module connector and reseated the connector into the module. The problem remains.

I've noticed several other members who have had problems after changing speakers, but I'm curious to know if this has been seen much by those who still have stock equipment.

I suspect the module may be bad but I thought I'd ask everyone for thoughts as well.

Thanks.

Any large metal objects stored in the trunk? Something like steel or iron can affect the magnetism.

No, nothing like that. Most of the time my trunk is empty. Great thought though, I hadn't really considered anything like that.

If it'* still under warrenty, I'd look at taking it in. If you have nothing metal in the trunk, and no subs, something is broke :?

My 01 SLE was doing the same thing a while back. See "Driving slowly in small circles". Turns out the connection to the module on the rear deck just needed cleaned. I sprayed some contact cleaner on the connections plugged it back in and it has been fine ever since. It'* worth a shot before you do anything drastic.

Thanks for the info.

My car is at the dealer for a transmission problem and I mentioned the compass problem to them as well. Hopefully they will fix it, but if not I'll try a good qualtiy contact cleaner. Right now everything is under warranty so I'm happy about that. I just hate to take my car out of service for simple fixes.

Thanks much for the feedback

If the dealer does something to fix your compass during that service I'd be interested in knowing what they did to solve your problem. Mine does the same thing as well, more so in the summer than in the winter. Can you post what the dealer ended up doing for you please?

My dealer has ordered a new compass module under warranty. I'm not sure exactly what they did to diagnose this as the problem. I have noticed that it will 'all of a sudden' start to work again. Even when this happens I've tried the calibration procedure and it won't work. During my calibration attempts I do make sure I'm driving very slowly. I've tried altering the speed but have had no success at all. At least when I first got the car I could recalibrate when indicated.

I'll post again and indicate once the new module is installed if the problem resolves.
