I drive a 92 bonneville sse, and my fan motor is totaly dead. I was driving my car to a friends house to get a mechanical problem fixed, and the car started smoking from the vents that point at the windshield, and between the windshield and dash. I turned the car off to let it cool down and turned the heat off for the rest of the drive. Now I have no fan at all. I really need some help, its starting to snow now and its very cold. I can't defrost my windows. I checked the ac fuse, and one other fuse that said something about a fan (fuse#16 and #17) and they are fine. I bought a new fan motor, and plugged it in to see if that was the problem, but the new fan won't work. There is no voltage at the switch at all according to my multimeter. I know that it sounds like I smoked a wire somewhere in the circuit, but can you give me an idea on other components I can check? I don't even know what is between the climate control and the motor. My car has the electronic climate control, does that mean there is no resistor block thingy? I noticed some people posted that there'* was intermittent, or not running at the speed the climate control said it was at. My climate control is not doing anything suspicious.

Being an SSE I bet you have the electronic climate control. If so, most like the blower control module smoked. It'* located under the maxifuse center on the firewall and partially enclosed in the blower ductwork. Which would be why you got the smoke.

I'd post for one or check the local junkyards. New I think they are over $100

The smell was odd, it didn't smell like any fluids I've ever smelled burning, and it wasn't rubber or plastic. Its funny though that someone brought up leaves, my car has been sitting for a while and leaves collected at the bottom of the windshield. When the smoke started I pulled the leaves out, and I tried to blow the rest out with a pressure washer. I assumed that the leaves blocked the fan, and burnt out the motor or the fuse, but the fuse is fine, and I bought a new fan and plugged it into the connector just to see if it was the problem, but it didn't work. I checked the conector, and I had 0 volts on all the wires when the electronic climate control said the fan was on full.

While yours is a 92 and mine is a 97..They are similar. I had a similar issue recently. Not only was my blower control module fried and smelling like a barbeque..but the wiring took a bit of heat as well. When you check that BCM, I'd bet you smell the fried chicken before you actually have it in hand.

I found and removed what I believe to be the bcm. It had two connectors on top, I think one had 3 wires (purple, grey and black) and one just had a red wire. I'm trying to remember, and I may be wrong. It was under the relay block, down in the vent next to the fan, and was held in by three 7mm bolts. It looks like an aluminum heat sink, and has that same funky smell to it as the smoke. Is this the bcm? How can I test the connectors to see if the wires leading to the bcm are ok? What voltages should I be getting?

I will test voltage on all wires when I get home tonight. I really am suspecting the bcm is the culprit, and I'm picking up a new one on the way home. I am getting one from a junkyard, so I think the only way to tell if its any good is to smell it, that should be amusing. Is there any way a blockage of the fan blades, or a bad motor could have caused my bcm to burn out? Just curious because the fan is mostly out, and I have a brand new one I haven't returned yet.

That would be the BCM. I know that smell well. It'* bascially an electronics power transistor on a heat sink with some other small electronics built in.

Swapping it out should fix you up. We'd need to find someone with the 92/93 schematics to test the wiring.

I will replace it tonight, but do you think I need to replace my fan as well? Or maybe check to see if anything is blocking the fan.

My own thinking is you already have the replacement fan. If you take out the old one you can check for debris in the blower housing while it'* out. The old fan is 15 years old. It might be pulling lots of amps and helped cook the blower control module--although they go out in various ways if you just look at them wrong. Mine went out after 4 years on a 98 leSabre.
