There was a TSB about this:

POWER TRAIN
TSB #108150A -- SOME VEHICLES MAY DISPLAY A CONDITION AT 70 MPH WHERE THE SPEEDOMETER READS ABOUT 4 MPH FASTER OR SLOWER THAN HUD. *TW (NHTSA ID #50563, DECEMBER 01 1996)

Not sure what it says about it but it may have some answers?

within 1mph all the way to 80. then its about 1. at 100 its about 2

156 on my HUD read 156 on my GPS, but the speedo needle was buried in the 'hump' of the steering column. Do I have a problem?
