Default Programming a keyless entry fob for 1992 SSE

I have two different remotes that I have been trying to program. I have been able to cause the locks to cycle when shorting the pins on the connector. I really just need clarification of what to do after the locks cycle. Should the key be on or off. Should the door be open or closed. What buttons do I push and for how long on the remote. Thanks in advance for your support

Key off, press and release, hear the clunk clunk, press and release a button on the other, hear the clunk clunk. Pull the wire out.

Any button.
