grille paint issue
a few days ago i had a post on my grille, then deleted it because it made no sense.
basically, can i soak my 2001 SE'* grille in paint thinner to pull all the paint off and then repaint the grille?
also when doing this re-paint, do i need to etch the honeycomb with anything so the paint sticks better? and would clear coat help??
thanks

I would think that you could use a light coat of a primer that will adhear to plastic then paint the desired color.
I will defer to the experts on painting.

There is this paint specifically made for painting plastic and I can't recall the name of it for the life of me. Ace Hardware has it though.
I never tried this on anything outside a car, but it worked great on an a-pillar pod setup from the 94 I had. I just put a few light coats of primer on then this "plastic paint stuff I can't remember".
Wow I'm useless.

Plastic fusion rings a bell. They also make a plastic primer. I just use duplicolor touch up spray paint for mine with some SEM adhesion promoter underneath.

Krylon Fusion is what y'all are thinking of. And they've got new colors every time I go into a store. Used to be kinda limited at first

and is this krylon going to be "chip free" after say 3 coats or so?
and should i find a clear coat of somekind too, or is that a waste of money?
Im still debating the custom fabricated mesh. thoughts on that???

It says on the can that it will be chip-proof after 7 days. I painted mine using the Krylon Fusion in June 2006. I only washed and dried it - no primer. I can't remember how many coats I put on, but it was probably 3-4.
It'* my daily driver (16k per year) - no chips yet (knock on wood).
You've got a different front end style than me...so I'm not sure how you inserts would come out...but mine came out quite easily. I wouldn't recommend painting it on the car if you can't help it. And if you do, then yes, tape off/paper the whole front nose...you don't want overspray getting on your car.
Here'* the link to when I did mine...
