Default A question on how i can get rid of chrome detailing on my 97

i was wondering if anyone in here could help me with this. i have a black 97 bonneville SE. i am about to tint the windows and i am looking for an all black looking for the car. but on my car i have these chrome 'detailings' (i dont know the word for it) that i really would like to get rid of.

here are 2 pictures of my car how it is right now:

now this is how i want it to look (without chrome detailings) :

does anyone have an idea how i could get rid of the chrome pieces and make them black? would i need to replace them? could i paint them? any help would be greatly appreciated

On my '95, all of the trim molding on the bumper started to fall off!

I know that you can get molding for the bumpers. Probably can get replacement molding for the molding on the doors too I would guess. Not sure what you would do above the doors.

I'm sure that there are a lot of folks who are a lot more expert at this than me who will chime in soon.

for the window molding, you'd want to get the SLE/SSE/SSEi molding, which is what the pictures are of the "you want" pictures. For the rest, I would suggest painting it yourself since the other bumpers don't have the same molding. Not sure how you would go about painting it, but that'* what I would do.

When I first started thinking about cosmetics for my green 95 SE, I started to look at other cars. Just about everything new had no chrome. They either had trim in same/similar color to the car, or black. I wanted to see what my car would like with black. Particularly because the chromey/plasticy trim on the front and rear bumpers was shot.

I went to Poop Boys or Advance Auto and got a roll of multi widths of black pinstriping $8. There was plenty to cover all of the trim you have circled. I picked up an extra roll of 2" for the extreme turn in the rear window.. any turns call for improvision.

It took me an afternoon, a razor knife, and a plastic thingy to really press the tape into grooves. But it came out great with a minimum of cuts on turns. You really have to be right up on top of it to see where a cut was made.

Again, I was more interested in seing what it looked like. But I have no problem leaving the look as is, until I can get to paint it.

Maybe that has a place in your plans. There are manyi widths so edge cutting is an absolute minimum, and you get real fast at it as the afternoon goes on..

You can take out the door and fender molding with a flathead screwdriver, and a heat gun if it'* stubborn.

Clean; wash with dist soap and water to remove all dirt and waxes
Sand; wet sand with 400-600 grit sand paper
Clean; repeat step #1
Prepsol; ...im not to sure what he is taalking about there this isnt something i have ever used or heard of it
Mask; mask off around all edges with masking tape and then tape news paper around all the areas that you just masked around (leave no gaps in the tape)
Paint; use a gloss black areosol paint, keep can 6"-8" away from the surface your painting and dont put on to much paint at once!
Clear; not requered with a gloss color coat
