I polished the lips on my 21 year old xlaces by using aircraft stripper to remove the clearcoat. Then I applied new coat and it looks as sexy as new!

Polished aluminum that has been anodized if not clear coated. Which means to be very careful not to use anything dramatically abrasive on them. Polishing ball and some metal polish and alot of time. Any shortcuts or chemicals is going to leave you wishing you hadn't.

i would start with basic rim cleaners (mcguire, turtle, etc) if that doesnt help then go into something stronger

I use the same product for my chrome wheels, and they look like new. Only problem is a lot of polished aluminum wheels have a clear coat on top of the aluminum, and this stuff will remove the clear coat. You could end up with a mess.
