Automotive plastic protectant review
My Sons 1998 S10 had a very weathered dash. Two weeks ago I had to remove the dash to replace the heater coil. Thought it would be a good time to recondition the dash.
In the past I have used Armour All, but many critics state it does not help, it may hurt in the long run.
I went and did some research.
Turtle Wax Premium Grade Trim Restorer, Price: $10, lasts about ten weeks
Wipe New, Price: $20, very expensive for amount of product in bottle, must wear gloves and apply outdoors, very potent vapors, works the best of any product but very pricey- can easily spend $100 in product on a single car
ReNu Finish, Price: $20, long lasting, but contains black dye that can stain
Meguiar’* Ultimate Black Plastic Restorer, Price: $11, works good at time of application, but looks completely faded after 45 days
Mothers Back-to-Black, Price: $9, same as Meguiar’*, fully fades out in 45 days after application
So, after my research, I did not like any of the above products. Wipe New as too costly, ReNu had black dye, Meguiars and Mothers were only very temporary fixes.
Doing more research, I came across a product sold on Amazon called 303 (30313) Aerospace Protectant. Price :17. What it does well is makes plastic look new and lasts a long time. What is does not do well is make plastic overshinny. I applied Aerospace Protectant two weeks ago,- it looks as good as the day I applied it. I am glad I purchased this over the other plastic restoration brands. The one other downside- it is only available mail order from what I can tell.
This comment was posted on Amazon- I thought it described well what I experienced with the S10 "Deep rich beautiful satin appearance on my 2008'* Corvette'* interior pieces. It does not leave a nasty, oily residue and offers a very subtle, fresh (show room) looking finish once dry."

Art,
Thanks. Wal-Mart is showing $80 plus $13 for shipping, 32 ounces. Amazon is $17 plus shipping. I am guessing Wal-mart'* pricing is in error.... but who knows.

You could just re-coat it with Herculiner.

people use it for undercoat, rock protection, all sorts of things. i used truck bedliner on the bottom half of my old pickup after new paint to protect from all the chips and stuff. i made steel floor panels and put that on it for my rhino since they come with cheap plastic. the has many uses and holds up well

That'* what I used to coat my bed, then the leftover I used on the top lid of my tool cart. I got pictures around here somewhere...
Really, I wasn't kidding about using it on the dash. Slap it on and forget about it. May not look pretty, but it will probably out last the truck. LMAO.
