Default how to clean tips...

well, i got done painting my grill chrome and it'* making me brainstome a bit. Since I did get a job a new exhaust is on down the road, along with new tips, but until then i started to think i could paint my stock tips chrome.

How/What would I go about cleaning the tips so i could paint them?
Um, maybe a little help w/ how to get them off too

THANKS!

When you look underneath your car you'll see two bolts holding each tip in. They come off easy. I think a 10mm socket. I cleaned mine with a wire brush and I sanded the hell out of them. I primed them with several coats, painted them gold (several coats), and clearcoated them (even more coats). Then sand and use rubbing compound (if you want a smooth shine. You don't have to). I may have to clean them up some after this salty winter. But they held up pretty well.

I used Easy Off oven cleaner (after preheating them in the oven), and an old toothbrush. Then hot soapy water, rinse, air dry. I used hi-temp flat black BBQ paint. I prefer the stealth look, and the black soot doesn't show.

Oh ya, I forgot to add, hi-temp paint would be better (thanks for the reminder Bill). The gold I used was 500* rated. They don't get too hot though. Not sure if they make a chrome hi-temp paint. :?

Rivets? :? That'* weird. You have a picture of that? I'm not sure why you don't have screws like me. But they should be mounted on the same place. So if you don't have screws I'd assume you can drill holes and get some screws to put them back on. :?

John, you're feeling the plastic pins that hold the outer bumper cover to the support rail. The 2 bolts for the exhaust heat shields (the actual term for the tips) are recessed. If you crawl under and look up, you'll see. You have the same tips as all 92-95 SSE/SSEi models.

Sandpaper would work too, hard to clean on the inside. After that maybe steel wool. Use LOTS of paint, cause they could get hit with rocks etc.

well, this is confusing. I'm looking at my service manual for the body of my car and it shows two rivits on eather side of the tip and no other srews or bolts to hold it in place. I think it must be different for the 92'*? :? :?: :o

I guess so then :? Don't know why. If you can get them off I'd drill holes and screw them back in after.
