Default mirror FINALLY!!!!

well, I got tired of waiting to get my mirror to the paint guy, and even though we are traveling 800 miles to NEBF, I still can't afford the $35 to get the mirror painted...lol

SO, I went to the local Meijer store and bought some 100 grit and 320 grit sandpaper, and a small Dupli - Color rattle can of touch up paint.

As you all know, my mirror was broken in the accident in september ( before I joined BC ) and I didn't fix it when I rebuilt the rest of the car.

The mirror on my parts car was the same color, but had many many stone chips and one huge spot about 1 X 2 inches where the paint was flaked right off. Looks like it was a white mirror and someone did a bad paint job on it.... not that mine is the best though

I started with the 100 grit to get everything relatively smoothed out, then went over the whole thing with the 320 grit. after I was satisfied with the way it felt, I wiped it down with some fingernail polish remover to get rid of any oils from my hands.

brought it outside and put it on a pole to paint it.... took about 15 - 20 coats. it started off great, but I ended up with 2 runs. the good thing is that you can't see them unless you are right on top of the mirror looking for them. the paint matched perfectly, and I didn't use any clearcoat, looks great.

I didn't get any before or during pics, but I will probably clean up the car tomorrow and take some pics of the finished product.

Looks like it will be time to fix my sig again.......

next project will be the silver lip on the crosslaces, there is alot of corrosion, and I am going to see if I can actually polish the lip to a nice mirror finish then clear coat.

other projects I am hoping to have done by the end of summer are:
in no particular order
tinted tails
cleared corners
repaint the rocker molding by the rear tires
tinted windows
more underhood details
exhaust ( high flow cat, and prob. flowmaster )

I have done lots of in the yard paint jobs over the years and I must say that is a lot of paint!! But I would suggest a clear coat 'cause it'* gonna chip - especially a mirror that takes the hits. IMO Good for you for taking on the project yourself!!!

if its a Laqure that dries to a gloss, then theres no need for clear, it wont hold up to chipping anymore then the red will. Clearcoat is only for UV protection and gloss of basecoats that dry with a dull finish

yea, it dried and looks like it has clear on it.

it took so many coats because they were very thin coats... I was TRYING to avoid runs, then I got impatient. also I wanted to make sure that you couldn't see the white paint underneath, because I had to sand through the red into the white to smooth it out. this only cost me about $10, so if it lasts just for the summer I will be happy, I mainly wanted it on there for the trip out to NEBF, just so I don't get hassled for it by any local law enforcement, and for all the pics that are going to be taken. I want my car to look good.

thanks for moving it peter, I wasn't really sure where to put it. :?
