Default Tinted tails & the limited time budget

Yup, this project had to be quick!
Tinted my tails today using VHT Nightshade. Had to be done while my kids were having a nap! Pretty sure you might see a baby monitor in the background!

Key ingredients here was of course the spray, a calm day, a steady hand, lots of masking tape as this was done without removing the tails.
Oh yeah, and a baby monitor

Lets start with a couple "Before:"
Quite a bit of delam!

A few more coats, Oh my wife is up. Now I can really go!

Off comes the masking tape. Note, I masked the reverse lights.

Now, I did not use a clear coat afterwards. When I tried it, it seemed to be rough, and it it didn't look good at all. I panicked and applied more VHT and it came out okay. Any advice for applying the clearcoat? Maybe I'll leave well enough alone...

Oh, if you ever happen to spill some of this product onto your bumper, degreaser on a rag will remove it, as long as you don't let it set in.

As a daytime safety note, I will invest in LED 1157'* for the outer brake / parking light.

Hope you like 'em.

Cheers,
Adam

Honestly, it would have taken only 5 minutes to remove them from the car.

Your clearcoat was probably a different solvent/type of paint, or you didn't let the VHT fully cure.

They look nice and even but for a really attractive gloss throw clear over them and then wetsand and buff. The clear would be a urethane clear shot from a gun preferrably because this dries and hardens from a chemical reaction between the paint and the catalyst. This will be resistant to UV rays and other elements just like the paint on your car. An enamel clear from a spray can will work but has little UV protection and is not likely to last nearly as long. This is because anything from a spray can dries and hardens from the evaporation of the solvent in the paint, there is no catalyst and therefore no chemical reaction. Just a little info if you decide to topcoat it, do what you want with it. An enamel clear might be OK in this application, but I wouldn't use it in any other applications.

I always wanted to do this on my 95. I'm amazed more people don't get stopped and hassled for it. The local law enforcement has nothing better to do around here...

I got pulled over recently (a couple times) and one of those times I was cautioned about my VAGUELY tinted license cover. He said nothing about the tails. And I've never heard of anyone being warned about them.

I think the beauty of the VHT product is the light really does come through okay. Maybe slightly compromised. I think if you show that to the law, they'll be okay.

Next may be removing the lights and clear coat. Maybe I'll have some time on my side when I venture into that. I'll be sure to post more pics if I do it!
