I've been playing with a muffler I have here and trying to figure out a few things with my car before I do anything with it. I looked at its height, the underside of my mom'* Sable, the underside of my 94, and the height of the OE muffler. There seems to be enough clearance for dual mufflers at the rear bumper'* exhaust cutouts. I also looked at pictures of Haro'* 95'* install, most recently found here:

I really like the look of dual tips, and I'd like to have dual mufflers behind those tips, even though I know it does nothing for performance on our cars. Call it ricing, call it , but I'd still like to chat about doing it. Seems simple, provided the proper hangers.

I bought a couple of Advance Auto Parts exhaust hangers probably used for mounting mufflers. I looked at them, and I'd have a picture if my digital camera had not kicked the bucket. Poor bucket. I looked online, but AAP doesn't have pictures. Here'* a quick Windows Paint masterpiece:


For right now with the exhaust hanging piece, I'd just like to know if someone has used those before. That, and of course warnings like "OMG You're going to die if you use those!" would help too.

Why would you consider this an appearance mod if you can't see the mufflers installed anyway?

Just put dual tips on it and be done. This is a waste of time, money, and effort for no cosmetic or performance gain.

Get your car running right first. Then spend money on ideas.

What got me thinking about this is how I actually can see both of the 97 Sable'* mufflers. It'* the 3.0L 24V DOHC engine that'* a PITA to maintain because of the little electronics whose sole purpose is to make you weep and pull out your hair. Just so you know in case you see one such Sable, look at the rear bumper.

I'd like to follow your recommendation and get my engine into great shape. Off to 92-99 I go!

Radomir, the SSEi rear bumper cover has a lower skirt that will hide the mufflers.

SSEi'* don't have much in common with Mercury Sable'*.

People driving behind a Sable can see both mufflers. Not even at that height would the mufflers be seen with the SSEi bumper? Need I mention that the previous owner'* fine reverse driving tactics led to... I need to take a picture. Since my camera is dead, I'll try to make a cell phone and a bad digital camera work instead. Notice here how the rear bumper line was moved up. The part that goes below this line and then swoops toward the front to hang on to something tore off and hung loosely.


This... I shouldn't even post this. See the exhaust pipe? Above it is the bumper. From looking at this, I gathered I could have two mufflers show.


You can see here clearly how much of the rear bumper is not quite there.


This bumper line is more Sable-like than SSEi-like, I believe. Don't you think so?

it'* pointless to try and run dual mufflers on these cars because of the way the rear floor section is designed.

they designed it that way for a reason.. plus, wren is right. you won't see the metal

+ FWIW, why try to be like another car ? SSEi'* are very very distinctive cars. They really don't blend in that easily. Why not leave it as is ??

Sure, but I figured since there aren't recessions where dual mufflers could go, there would be a better chance of having them show. In fact, I like the muffler w/out tips look more.

Wait, what? I'm not trying to be like another 92-99 SSEi car, if that counts. I probably got that the day I bought the car, but I'm not convinced. I would like to leave the stock muffler there but... Wow... There are two holes in the back, but they don't pierce the inside piping.

I know that mufflers already have holes, the out & in ones, but these are not stock. I shot some Gunk auto body undercoating in the two holes and around the lips to prevent unwarranted corrosion. Also, it'* really rusty and shaky. I hear rattling in the muffler area, but only some of it is the heat shield.

Then replace it with the right style of muffler for half the cost of splitting into duals.

Well yes, that definitely is the cheapest way to go. With the greatest seriousness, are there tips that look like mufflers?
