in the mean time (while winters passes through) I would suggest cleaning the areas of all the salt and dirt and then coat the rusted/bare metal areas with a thick coat of wax. but do not rub the wax off. just leave the wax there until you can properly remove all the rust in the spring and put touch up paint over the metal. That is what i would do.

Just get someting on it! If you can stand it, hit it with a rust converter. Then something sttronger than wax, a polymer that doesn't breathe. Liquid glas or nu-finish. And we'll all pray for an early Spring.
