eggplant colored bonny
Hey guys.. I'm getting closer to painting my '93 bonneville.. All along, I've said black is the way I'm gonna go.. But I recently saw a '99 bonny with a dark eggplant color, almost black in dim light, but certainly kinda purple. It had the light gold lace wheels, and was real sweet... I looked on the duplicolor website to get the name of the color, and I think it is "dark mulberry", but I'm not sure. Can anyone direct me to a sight where I can be sure, or, can anyone tell me the GM color number? I want to call my supply house and get prices, and to see if it is a double stage BB/CC, or if it is a 3 stage.. Please reply. Mike

right under my nose...
...okay, so I didn't look very closely before I posted my question.. Thank you very much. But, I have a few more questions.. The cherry isn't off the potential color list, but, the car is originally the black onyx. My supply house tells me there is a bit of a brown tinge to this black, although it looks pretty pure black to me.. A factory mixed generic black, dupont chromabase #99K is a pure black. But I'm wondering if this will not look quite right. I will paint the entire car, inside and out, so there will not be a match issue among outside body panels, but, I have the light gold wheels and tan leather interior.. I'm just wondering if it will look funny, being pure black. Has anyone had experience with this? Or can someone form an opinion? Thanks, Mike

you will not be able to tell the differance with your eye between the Onyx Black and the pure black if yout doing a complete paint job. the only time you can see the Brown tine of the Onyx Black is if it not sprayed on enough for proper coverage, it usualy only taked 2 coats to acheave coverage with that color and as a rule of thumb 3 coats is usually the minimum for the base coat.
IMO i would stick with the factory color so that if there is ever a need for a panel to be repainted it will be dont the right color, the painter will just look up the code in the trunk and paint what it says assuming you do black, in my case if i ever have to do black on a GM car I just assume that its 8555 and mix and shoot that never stoping to think that someone may have changed the shade (never had that yet)
Also check out this thread, im doing my '92 in black aswell

sweet ride...
I see what you are saying about future matches, but, I'm doing the painting, and if for some reason down the road I can't do the painting, then I am probably dead and wouldn't care anyway!! HAHAHAHA!! I plan on using Dupont Chromabase, and I think I will go with their factory black, #99 (can't remember the letter code, but whatever their BB/CC urethane is)
Got a question for you, however.. I've been told, although I'm not sure if I agree, that I don't need a flex agent on the soft parts, with today'* urethanes any hit big enough to crack the paint will also damage the bumper itself.. so don't bother using it. Plus, if not used, then there is no chance of slight color variations that flex agent can cause.. What are your thoughts on this?? Thanks.. Mike

the thought on flex is that its only put into the paint for the initial handling of the part when being put back on the car, even paint reps say this(for all companys but BASF)
this is compleat and utter BS when you put flex in the paint its there forever (or atleast should be, again depends on company). Yes todays paints are soft, but they dont stay that way without Flex, and it can crack without the part cracking.
in conclution, PUT FLEXED CLEAR ON ALL PLASTIC

yes, that'* the color..
I love that eggplant / dark cherry.. But the car was originally black, although I am using a body shell from a green car because black bonny was rotted real bad.. But all the bolt-ons are from the original car. My wife thinks I should keep it black, and since black is my favorite color on a car.. That'* what she'll be.
I just finished the tranny over the weekend, complete rebuild.. Last night I power washed the empty subframe.. Car will be sweet.. Thanks for the advice on the flex agent... Mike
