I'll be getting my car repainted soon so I'd like to go over my options. The guy I know who is going to paint my car wants to use a stage 1 paint job. He'* telling me that with the stage 1 he prefers it because it resists chips better than a stage 2 because the stage 1 has the clear coat mixed in with the paint so it helps to protect it. I had wanted to go with stage 2 because I hear you can get a better shine out of it.. I don't really know my paint so I need some advice here. he told me I can still get a good shine (like I hav enow) if I get a performance gloss hardener that you spray on after everything else. I'm not sure though.. What should I do? Do more layers of clear coat give you a better shine? I just want to make sure that when i repaint my car it has the same look and shine it has now.. (minus the paint chips etc. )

Only the old painters use single stage paint anymore. For your application and what your looking for go with a base coat, clear coat paint job. This should consist of at least 3 coats of color and 3 or more coats of clear. The more clear the better the duarbility and depth.. Make sure your painter uses a good paint and clear, Like PPG, Dupont...Not some cheap paint like OMNI unless you dont mind getting you car repainted within a few years. Are you getting the whole car repainted or just a blend? Go with what came on your car. Base/Clear..

alright. I'll try to talk him into doing base coat/clearcoat. So the more layers of clearcoat I get, the better the depth will be? I've heard that this car had 6 layers of clearcoat from the factory! Don't know how true that is or not though...

I doubt that the factory had 4 coats on it when it was new. The more clear the better the depth of the paint. He could go crazy if you had the right painter. Lay down clear, wet sand, lay down clear, wet sand, lay down clear, wet sand,,, You get my drift. There arent many painters that will do this and it will be expensive. Tell him that you want base/ clear and at least 4 coats of clear... Also tell him/her NO RUNS.... Ask him if he wet sand'* and buff'* after his paint job? You would be surprised at how many painters dont like to wet sand and buff..

DO NOT get 1 layer of paint. Get a Base/Clear coat, or you'll be sorry. 1 layer paint would most likely be enamel, and that'* what Maaco uses. I really don't think you need to repaint your car thought, are there any major problems that need it? Repainting a car should take atleast a week, all panels should be removed, to be covered front to back, and like said, wet sanding should be done. Your should really have a professional do it, or someone who'* done it before, and they do with with proper paint.

He'* not giong to do one layer of paint... He'* doing aroudn 4 layers of paint/clearcoat mix, that'* a stage 1 paint job. A stage 2 paint job is 4 layers of paint, then around 3-4 layers of clearcoat on top... He said you could use a "peformance gloss hardener" to make it shine just as good as clearcoat. but, the only problem with that, is that I'm afraid it won't look as good as it does now. I was going to get the car repainted because the left rear quarter panel has been keyed, right quarter panel has a huge door ding in it, trunk has orange peal, hood has paint pealing off, front bumper has accident damage.. So, the only thing that doesn't need to be repaired is the roof, and driver'* side door. lol. figured it'd just be easier to do the whole car. I was going to have a professional shop do it, BUT they wanted $3,000 to do it.. This guy is going to charge me $1,000. He'* a friend of the family. He'* painted probably over 30 cars before and all of them turn out good. He painted my last car too. (Buick LeSabre.)




That car doesn't look bad at all for an 88. I miss that car sometimes. :(

$1000 isn't bad, but I think if you want a lasting paint, use the specific GM paints, with base and clear. Your hood will need special primers as well because it'* aluminum.

Find some deep metallic or pearl paint and make it SHIIIINE.

Hell, get that Burnt Orange GM uses now, and I'm sure you'd be the first riv with that.
