smokey startup
57 star chief smokes at startup. Never smokes cold, omly hot and not all the time. Valve guides or seals right? Wrong! The heads were redone, new valves, guides, seals...still smokes. Compression test reads 148-153 new engine 160. Cyl walls look great, pistons etc look new. . Good vac test.Did not bothe rwith a wet test. Looking for fresh ideas... Could an oil control ring be stuck or broken? ( good comp test?) Could the engine still need to be broken in. 2000k since rebuild and I can still see a hone on some of the cyls. A few people have told me that the stock o ring valve seals stink and should be replaced with pos sealing teflon umbrella seals.Someone else told me to pul lthe plugs and squirt some mystery oil in each cyl and let it soak o night. Another guy said to take it out and run it and it will probably stop on its own ( the it might fix itself theory), any other ideas? This one has me stumped!!

Unfortunately, I don't have any answers for this issue yet, but did you check your last thread from earlier this year? I just posted in it this morning.

The valve guides are a little loose. Here'* how to make sure: Find a long hill, and at the top, coast down with your foot completely off the gas. At the bottom of the hill, watch the rear-view mirror and give it some gas.
If you see blue smoke in the mirror, it'* valve guides.
If it only smokes on hot start-up, it'* probably pooling a little oil around the valves, whcih then runs down the guides and into the combustion chamber
If the plugs don't look oil-fouled, fuhgeddabout it and drive it. Oil'* cheap.

Guides are not worn...new guides and valves. somehow oil is getting into the chamber. Since it does not smoke while running I can rule out the rings. I'm not familiar with the o-ring style seals but the fact that they are all the way up at the collar and not down at the guide (like an umbrella seal) may be the problem. I can't just run an engine that is not perfect( a little smoke freaks me out) Anyone have any experiance with this?PS...Bob, I tried writing your friend jim dillon about this, and have not recieved a reply.
