Carter AFB and Hard to start 64 Bonneville
Well, I've rebuilt the carburator but have a hard time starting the car after a few days. If I start it ecery day it will start but only after a few cranks.
A mechanic believes carbon has built up on the intake manifold causing the gas to mix with the carbon forming a gooey mess.
Suggestions? :?:

Why did you rebuild the Carter Carb in the first place? What were your symptoms before you rebuilt the carb? Is the choke working properly? I'm sure you have some carbon in the intake manifold and some on the piston heads(we all do), but I seriosly doubt you have a "gooey mess" in there. How are the plugs, points, wires, rotor, and distributor cap and the timing? You might need to find a some "slightly" older person that has worked on these cars in the past.

The car was tuned up.

Looks to me like ol'timer is volunteering his services.
I am assuming that your bonney has the 389(last year for that grand block).
Hard start conditions are usually spark related on these beasts. Ol'timer was on the money about the ign system checks. If you dont know how to do them get a manual and some assistance from your father,grandfather(or equilivant substitute)
Just a couple questions about the carb rebuild...1, was the float replaced? 2, Did you or someone else do your rebuild?
A listing of the symptoms is a great help in diagnosing these issues. If you are unsure of what and where to look I am sure you can ask and someone will answer.
I know its hard not to jump the gun. We all want our rides to purr while going down the strip. spending the time to find the problem rather than putting a bandaid on the symptom occasionally takes some time. Especially if your a DIYand not a Professional.(no offense intended).

Don't think the floats were replaced. I had the carb rebuilt. I beginning to wonder if the fuel line pressure is OK. I put a filter on the feed line near the carb. I noticed that the fuel is below the intake when I first start it up...or try to start it.

My 64 bonnie hearse has the same problem. Someone turned me on to a guy that is known as the Carb King. He said the AFB is notorious for boiling the gas in the fuel bowl from engine heat. I just got an insulating gasket that I'm going to try as soon as I get my brake woes fixed. I'll see what happens after that. If it doesn't help, I may get a Edlebrock carb.

Carb King is one of the top carb guys out there.
On my 64 Bonneville with 389 /AFB. I blocked off the intake heat with freeze plugs in the heads and added a 77 400 air cleaner with cool air pickup. It made a world of difference. I also installed a manual choke. I found out the old auto choke heat lines were rusted away in the intake causing a vacuum leak.
I only drive my car in the summer for fun.
