Quick ? on how to tell one. In the process of restro-rodding my 76 *-3 (bought in 7, which came w/ the gut less SB 400, course, launching a ton of pig iron w/ airplane gears didn't/doesn't help. ANYWAY, have a 454, from a 1970, 1 ton pickup. 4 bolt main, two piece rear seal.

Sorry, don't have any #'* off the block, but it is "blue".

im going to say its not original if its a 454. you are going to have to find the numbers

Granted, only the #'* will tell. Bought it 15 +/- yrs back, just setting, waiting to br rebuilt-n-hopped up a little. a BB for sure and it is blue. A straight friend sold it to me, we got talking about few yrs back, told me those blocks are rare and might be better off just getting another 454 and keep this one.

Doing the whole car over, so not in no super hurry, would like to run a serpeten(sp) belt. Was a write up in Chey High Performance about getting stuff from salvage yards in order to do so. Guy had a older Gen IV and wondered if newer Gen IV parts would fit. Was told it would, Getting ahead of myself. Need to find out what I got-n-go from there..

to be honest really woudnt be a good engine for your car any way all the truck engines have like all torque no hp. any crate 350 these days is 50 to 100hp more than the 245 your 400 is rated for. or you can have the 400 rebuilt with higher compression, cam and aftermarket heads. one of the guys i raced with had a built 400 in a 80'* camaro and its pretty fast.

Keep the sbc 400, yeah they were an anchor new, but a bump in compression and some more air going through the heads and they screen. The bbc is going to cost an arm and a leg to rebuild, and you will gain almost 200 lbs. up front. 400 sbc'* are getting harder and harder to find. *-3'* are cool, good luck with the build.

Granted, the BB is way heavier. Just a old school kinda guy, had a 69 SS 396 Chevelle w/ a 4 spd. And U'r correct on parts for BB are a LOT more than SB'*. And as also mentioned, truck motors are torque,, not so much HP. being my car is heavy, I'm looking for torque, to get it going FAST and not so much on top end. The old saying "there'* no replacement,, for displacement". Rings true.

power is power and it doesn't matter if its a built 4cyl you put in it if its got 300hp it going to way faster than that old truck motor. if it was me i would just have the 400 rebuilt
