Default Chevy 3.4 Needs Intake gaskets

I posted in this section as I would get more responses since this is a popular chevy engine used in many models.
Seems my 99 Olds Silhouette needs the intake manifold gaskets changed. Starting to see some moisture in the oil and losing a bit of coolant as well. Engine runs well with the usual piston slap. Engine is original with 172K and only work done was the very same gaskets changed at 50K. Van is still in good shape with no body rust but transmission is original and never worked on (except for fluid changes) but does have that occasional PCS problem. I won't be doing the repair, too many oddities that scare me. Is this engine worth saving or should I go with a junk yard one with lower miles?

Change out the gaskets. The Chevy 4.3'* are good engines. They are based off of the Chevy 350'*. Which were good engines. Keep them maintained and they will go on.

?

the engines had problems with the gaskets. they have a revised design, felpro ones, which you probably didnt get if yours were changed that long ago. i always do my own work you have a big interest in not getting stranded on the side of the road. so i personally take my time and make sure everything is perfect and the right parts. doing the manifold really isnt a big deal. just have to keep it clean and change the oil and coolant right away.

Justin, I was simply saying the 4.3'* were good engines mechanical wise, just like our 3800'* except for the typical gasket issues with both engines.

It is certainly worth fixing. You could buy a "newer" engine and find out it needs the gaskets changed. The decision on doing it yourself versus paying someone to do it depends on your comfort level with taking this on.

And don't mind Mike. He tends to be dyslexic before noon. 3.4 looks like 4.3 before he has a couple cups of coffee.
