worn out switch
Hello All,
My problem today is with my son'* 2001 Malibu. The ignition switch has worn to the point that you can take the key in and out without even shutting off the engine. Several times in the last couple of weeks, the battery died overnight for no apparent reason. The alternator and battery check out good. I'm thinking that maybe the switch is not being shut of completely and causing a drain on the battery. Does this make sense?
By the way, there has also been an issue with the security system causing the car not to start and having to be reset.
Since this switch has a recall on it for other reasons, I suggested to the mechanic that he replace switch and eliminate that as possible cause. He says that is not whats
causing the problem. I understand that the issue with the recall is not the problem, but I think it makes sense to replace it and see if it fixes the other issues especially since it has been recalled. Thoughts?

If the key comes out, that means the tumblers inside the ignition lock cylinder are worn. The ignition switch is the electrical part of the system. Since your having security issues, Id replace the lock cylinder. Gm sells the cylinder and the pass key sensor as a kit. The recall your referencing only applies to the keys. Adding inserts to the keys to prevent unwanted key rotation.

After reading the letter from GM I realized they were not replacing the switch. They have done the key fix and replaced the battery. We'll see if the problem was actually the battery. I still believe its going to need the new switch.
Thanks for the help guys
