2015 Colorado Towing
We just bought a new 2015 Chevy Colorado V6 3.6 engine with towing package. Not 4 wheel drive. We are wondering how it will tow our 5000 lb trailer up mountain roads.

I think your rated towing capacity is 6,700 pounds, but check your owner'* manual to be sure. That being the case, you should have no issues. The only time 4 wheel drive would come into play is when you are in low traction conditions (snow). Under normal conditions 2 wheel drive will handle it quite well.

Actually, you can tow a 7,000 pound trailer, so long as you don't exceed the gross vehicle weight (vehicle + people + cargo + tongue weight of trailer) of 12,000 pounds.

12K on a 3.6? Specs on Chevrolet website is 3960lbs empty weight, max GVWR of 5700 which would include the weight of the trailer and its load. So max weight of the trailer would be 3960-5700=1740lbs of trailer weight. This does not take into account of driver, passengers of truck itself.

GVWR includes the weight of the tow vehicle, passengers, gear, etc. plus the tongue weight of the trailer, not the weight of the trailer itself. Still I think towing a trailer with a dry weight of 5000 pounds, add in the weight of the provisions and fresh water and you're likely to be in the 5500 pound area with a vehicle rated to tow 7000 pounds would be marginal at best in mountainous areas or on any kind of grade. It would be my guess that manufacturers state their tow ratings based on ideal conditions, i.e. at sea level and no grade.

Mike, re-read what I posted. You can't exceed 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, which includes vehicle, passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight. I pulled that straight from page 9-63 in the owner'* manual:

I'm thinking the 5700 GVWR you are referencing is kilograms, not pounds.

WTF was I looking at? Either the data changed or I was looking at the specs for a pinto.

Even though I think the Colorado will do fine pulling your trailer, you may find up steep slopes, that using manual shifting may be beneficial, to keep the transmission from roaming between gears.
Apparently the cruise control will still work even in manual gear selections.
Check your manual, there is a break in period before any towing is recommended as well.
Besides the hitch, what did the factory tow package consist of? Brake controller? Transmission cooler, extra fan clutch rad cooling by chance? Would be interesting to know...
Would be nice to have extra gauges like trans temp too!
Oh & Edit, Welcome to the forums Kim !
