Know where I can get some schematics or exploded views of the transmission? My Haynes has none. They tell you how to do a total engine rebuild in pictures but assume you are too dumb to do any transmission work...

You can go on Ebay and type in 4t65e ATSG should bring it up. I'll see if I can find a link.

I have a wide crow bar, the kind used in wood working. I want to say it'* 2" wide. Push the axle in with a sharp push. Then take the crow bar and give it a sharp pop out. It should come right out.

Depending on which part isn't coming out.

If the axle won't come out fo the bearing at the knuckle. Put the nut on so you don't damage the threads and hit the end of the axle a few good whacks to see it moving in/out when you hit it.

If it'* not coming out of the trans. Pop under with a piece of wood and a hammer. Put the wood up against the back of the inner CV joint and give it a couple good whacks. It'll pop free.

Biggest thing to remember when dealing with these collapsing circlip type axles is that you don't want a constant pressure. You need to have no pressure on the clip, then a quick hit to compress it for it to release.

Finally got the right side CV shaft out! 6 different prybars later. I even wrapped a chain around it and tried jerking it out, but finally the last prybar did it. I pulled the diff cover off and the gears look good. There was minor damage on a few teeth on the speed pick up wheel/gear. I cleaned the burrs off.

Found the remains of the clip in the pan. So, get to put it all back together this weekend if I can find the $1.31 snap ring for the output shaft. Lot of work for $1.31 part!

Thanks everyone for your help!

OK, gonna show my transmission ignorance, but need to understand if I have the wrong snap ring.

Went to Whatever It Takes Transmission in Indy and picked up snap ring U84895 which is a half moon, flat snap ring, but it is too big around and does not stay on the shaft (diff end). Should they have sold me part U14895A instead?

Only way to get this one to fit would be to crimp it, but that doesn't seem right and doesn't look like clip I saw in pics on Grand Prix site (link below). Thinking I need the square snap ring, not the flat one.

Of course, they are not open on Saturday.

Sounds like you may have the clip for a 1997. That year had a different clip that pushed on. 98 and up has a clip that wraps around the output shaft. If that'* the case that clip wont work because the output shaft is also different.
