Default 1996 chevy lumina APV fan issues? Help.

hey im a newbie to this board. and im having a problem figuring out which relays go to the fans. There not coming on, temp will rise above the middle in traffic & nothing, i would think the low speed should kick on by then right? The ECT seems fine, when i disconnect it while running the fan comes on, so i'm assuming its a relay out. I did locate 4 relays on the PS behind the headlight area, are these them?

Which fan is what, theres 1 on the DS & PS from looking under the hood.

Thanks for any help.

havent worked on that car but if you can find some relays that are the same swap them and see if your fan starts working

After talking with 2 garages, they both said if you disconnected the ECT & the fan came on then the relays are good & the ECT is bad.

The temp will rise above the middle. The middle of what? How hot is your temp gauge showing? If you disconnect the ECT sensor, the fans will kick on automatically. This is a safety precaution built into the PCM.

The ECT may not be bad, you may be just seeing a warmer than normal condition, but it won't warrant the fans to come on.

Anyway you can get a scantool capable of monitoring engine temp?

The fan doesn't come on, it has 2 speeds (low-high), it should come on at 194* (low speed) according to the book, with the gauge crawling dang near 3/4 the way up, i'm sure its pushing 200*+ at this point. I understand that the fan will automatically come on when the ECT is disconnected, From what the mechanics told me, the ECT lets the PCM know when to turn on the fan, but I can definitly rule out any of the relays being bad because the fan would not opperate at all "unless" it was hooked up directly to the battery & the PCM was bypassed.

What book are you getting the 194 out of? I don't think I have ever heard of fans coming on at temps that low. Our B-villes come on around 220ish.

Hmm, wait a minute, I can't remember, when the ECT is disconnected, I'm not sure if its the low speed relay or the high speed relay that comes on. Darn it. If I knew which relays were which, I could tell you how to test the circuit.

But I do know that BOTH fans come on at the same time regardless of which speed is commanded.

If you were in my neck of the woods, I could scan it and tell you if the ECT gauge is bad or anything else.

Another question, how'* the coolant level in the radiator and overflow tank?
