52 Coupe de Ville wiper problem. HELP!
Need a lesson on disassembly of the wiper linkage. The small chrome pieces that cover the spray nozzel and the shaft need replating. But I think it would be easier to replate them if they were OFF the vehicle. Can't figure out how to remove the serrated drive sleeve (round **** that drives the wiper arm) from the shaft. I can loosen the internally threaded collar that has the two slots in it but of course it won't come off because this serrated **** is in the way. Is there a special puller that will get it off? Is it threaded?
OR??
Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the reply.
The serrations are on the outside of the piece that I can't remove. They are what the wiper arm slide onto. I cant tell for sure, but I do not think there are grooves on the I.D. of this piece.
I have been periodically hitting it with PB Blaster for a couple of days so I am going to try to pry it off this afternoon. I just hate going at it too hard for fear of damaging this piece or the shaft!!!

You can upload the picture to a site like www.photobucket.com or www.imageshack.us and copy-paste the link here, or you can click "go advanced" and click the little paperclip and upload it as an attachment.

If I understand you correctly, the serrated sleeve that you are referring to is part of the wiper transmission and I have never seen that piece being able to be removed from it'* assembly, but I am no 52 Caddy expert either.
Do you have a service manual? You may want to call John Gately here in Mass @ 617-445-3300. He is the local Caddy Guru. He is going through some building damage issues, so he may be busy, but I'd call him after 7:00 PM. He also has plenty of Caddy parts.

X2 on that comment. That serrated sleeve is typically not serviceable. The ones I am familiar with have the center post rivetted over to retain the sleeve. You could drill them out to remove the sleeve, but would be left with nothing to peen over to retain a new sleeve.

Eureka....Thanks all for the input. I do have a "shop" manual that I never dreamed would cover this so I never looked at it. That was a mistake. It does in fact cover the entire removal and installation of this serrated piece. It is called a "burr" and requires a J-2682 removal tool. Basically the tool looks like a small gear puller, so I may be able to rig something up. But getting it back on might be my biggest problem since gear pullers are usually not set up to reverse the process. Pounding it back on with a hammer doesn't appear to be an option.
But its comforting to know that it is a press fit and it is supposed to slide off. Who knows, I might get lucky and find the J tool on eBay!!!!
Thanks again for the all the input.

Just finished removing the burrs. No J tool needed. The shaft has #8-32 threads in it. I put a 1/2 inch countersunk head phillips screw in it about a 1/4 inch deep. Then with a large pair of channel locks was able to slide the burrs right off. If your channel locks are like mine, one of the jaws is a little longer than the other so I put that long jaw on the screw head and the shorter jaw under the lip of the burr. It took took several passes going at it alternating 180 degree positions but it came off unscathed.
To put them back on I plan to use a longer #8-32 screw and a nut. Put the burr in position, thread the screw in 1/4 inch and then run the nut down to push the burr back on to the shaft. The OD of the shaft is knurled so I will try to match up the knurling with the existing grooves in the burr.
Now, one of the burrs has all the knurling worn off the OD, so I am going to need a replacement. Anyone have an idea where to get this piece?? New/reproduction is preferred. It looks like it is made out of pot metal. I tried a few salvage yards around here and no luck. I would expect Cadillac, Buick, Olds are all the same. My 52 Pontiac has the burr staked on.
Thanks,
Rick
