I am having one hell of a time here and could use some help.

I have a 1988 Alberter Regal d'Elegance (B-body LeSabre estate wagon chassis). Original wiper motor went at 88k miles shortly after I purchased the car.

Threw a junkyard wiper motor assembly in and was fine until around 100k and now it went.

Tried no less than four junk yard wiper motors, all were bad one way or another. So I broke down and bought a A1CarDone brand rebuilt one from Advanced.

As soon as it was on the car and I went to test it the first time, the wiper arms worked ok but as soon as I went to use the washer fluid the motor burned up.

Exchange it under warranty for another A1CarDone remade one. Immediately I am suspicious that Advanced gave me one someone returned to them because it came missing the mounting grommets & the wiper arm retaining nut (which the first one all came with in brand new condition).

Put it on the car, it works great. Except: you guessed it, no washer fluid pump.

So I tried troubleshooting.

• Verified washer fluid tank is full
• Verified washer hoses (all 3) are not clogged
• Verified washer fluid screen was not clogged
• Verified washer nozzles were not clogged
• Added battery cable to go from body of washer motor to firewall to ensure it has plenty of solid ground connection
• Verified wiring both matches the factory service manual and is giving the appropriate ground & +12v when it should (thus confirming fuse & multifunction switch are okay).

I need the washer pump to work to pass inspection. In my state its a fail if you don't have it working.


I am close enough to Philly where A1CarDone is based I am tempted to drive to their office, bring it into their lobby and offer them money if they can get one of their employees to get their remade motor to work correctly (my bet is they just do crappy rebuilds).


Do I just yank it and order an AC Delco model? Is there anything else I can try? I am feeling fairly defeated at this point.


Which AC Delco p/n is for the delay-equipped washer motor assembly so I know what to order? Can they still be ordered from the dealer and if so what kind of warranty comes with them?


I have to say I love my car but there are two things in the 80s GM just could never get right- first is power antenna motors (where the plastic stop-switch fails usually far before 100k and then the motor runs 24/7 even while the car is off, killing your battery until you find the source of the problem) and wiper motors (where eventually the stop-switch fails and then the motor runs on "high" whenever the car is on- ALL THE TIME).

With the power antenna I tried following the factory service manual instructions to remove it and could not accomplish it. I have decided to just leave the broken one on the car until if/when I ever have to pull that fender. But wiper motors... I need working wiper motors!

I am confused. You seem to be talking about the wiper motor and the washer pump motor as though they are the same thing, when in fact they are completely separate. The wiper motor is under the windscreen cowl where the wiper arms are (as you know since you already changed it) and the washer pump motor is mounted on the outside of the washer bottle. A problem with one has nothing to do with the other. If you replaced the wiper motor and the wipers are working but the washer pump is not, replace the washer pump motor.


Did you check the fuses?

On B-Body RWD GM cars and RWD Cadillacs of the era the washer pump is built into the wiper motor assembly. A hose literally goes from the wiper motor assembly into the washer fluid tank and the only thing besides that in the tank is the floater (fluid level sensor) and a screen on the end of the hose to protect it from dirt & debris.

They might be mounted in the same area, but the wiper motor is separate from the washer pump motor. When you look up the parts on-line they are different motors.
