I have a fuel gauge problem on my 2008 Buick LaCrosse. After a fill up, the fuel gauge goes to the full mark, and stays there. This has happened four times since I’ve owned the car, and each time the dealer replaces the fuel level sensor in the gas tank (still under warranty thank goodness) . The dealer has told me that the cause is sulfur in the gas causing the small wires in the sensor to corrode and break.

If this is the cause, I would expect that it would be fairly common problem and that by now GM would have redesigned the sensor to fix this issue. Therefore, I wonder if the dealer is fixing the symptom rather than the cause.

Has anyone else experienced this and/or can give me a hint as to what I can tell the dealer when I take the car back again next week for this so it gets fixed once and for all?

This is not a cause I have ever heard. Sounds like a add explanation to me.

Dan - Do you have any ideas as to what the dealer should be checking for besides the sensor, or maybe what could be causing the sensors to go bad every eight or nine months (incorrect installation perhaps)? At this point I can only go by what the service tech at the dealer tells me, which isn't much and doesn’t make sense.

Well, it happened again. The fuel level sensor located in the gas tank has failed a fourth time in the past four years. Each time the dealer has replaced the fuel level sensor. This first occurred in Dec 2008 (7574 miles), then Nov 2009 (21145 miles), Dec 2010 (37344 miles), and now Oct 2011 (50656 miles).

alot of cars have a inspection cover that you can take the sender unit out without dropping the tank, maybe its worth a look to see whats going on. do you get gas at the same place all the time?
