Are they the original drums? Have they ever been cut/resurfaced??

Pull them off and look at them, the pads, and the brake cylinders.

Yeah, like Wiwren said, you're gonna have to pull the drums from the car. I've had my rear wheel cylinders leak onto the shoes and it caused that grinding sound that I think your experiencing. Could also have "thrown a shoe" or it'* riding on the rivets. Anyway, once you pull the drums you'll see the good, the bad, or the ugly.

Does it only happen when you first start driving?

my car might be doing the same thing. only i thought it was the front. so I start to unscrew the blots and I get that feeling that one of the screws is bout the snap off in the bolt. so i stopped.

I remember that feeling distinctly before it happend before. while i was doing my brakes. I installed them myself so I thought maybe I did something wrong. well right now im gonna buy all new wheel bolts and screws. the old ones are brittle
