does his 97 has a 4t65 or 4t60?
If its a 4t65, then the two trannys should be identical
btw, your title says 97, and your post says 98

in 2000 they did some changes ....remember the 2 codes when you were loking for a trans? One for for early production 2000 and one is for later, which I believe carried over.
I'd suggest giving Ed Morad a call. 216 798 6902.
P.*. if it will work in the 97 I have one here out of my 2000 GTP. needs the side cover, but internals are good. $300. Only 38k. I'll have to get the code off the trans.

You might want ask Ed about the cover. He might be able to use the one off his 97. I'm just not sure if the cover is the same from the H-body to the W-body.

The fittings at the transmission for the cooling lines will be different.

You can see the thread here;

Hope that helps.

XA has two cooler line fitting revisions, early #1 and early #2. XB transaxles are considered the late revision. An early #1 trans will not work on an early #2 car'* cooler line, and vice versa. However, a late will swap into an early #2 with a retrofit fitting. There is no retrofit fitting to swap a late trans into an early #1 car.
If you have an early #1 car and an early #2 or late trans, or an early #1 trans and an early #2 or late car, then you will need to locate the cooler line with the early #1 fitting.
Note that this only applies to the cooler line that faces up into the trans, as the side facing line is the same across the board.
As near as I can tell:
Early #1 = 1997-1998
Early #2 = 1999-early 2000
