Hello,

I have a question about replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor Interupter (magnet). I have already removed the sensor and cranked the engine to view the interupter. It is in place, but cracked and half of the top part of the plastic case is gone. So, my question is can this be replaced without removing the timing gear? I understand that I have to remove the water pump and timing gear cover. Once this is done, can the interrupter be replaced on the timing gear without removing anything else. I know I should also re-do the timing, but I really don't have the extra time and the car only has 70,000 miles.

1992 Buick LeSabre - 3.8L V6

No need to remove the water pump. Just remove the timing cover and the water pump will come with it. You will then need to remove the timing gear because the magnet is inserted from the back. Be sure to make not of your timing marks. And double check them before you start closing it up. As a rule I always take a picture of the dots. That way I can check, just to make sure.

Thank You for your reply. One question, does this repair also include replacing the oil pan gasket? I called on the timing cover gasket and was told that their computer also told them that it required replacing the oil pan gasket also. Thank your for any info you can provide.

Not sure on your year. I know the series2 engines its 5 bolts on the oil pan.

It is a 1992 LeSabre. It looks like the Series II came out in 1995, so I don't have to worry about that. Thanks again for your help.

We have 1992 ssei, on ot when timing cover is off, it exposes oil pan. So we had to replace it'* gasket as well, since I couldn't trust in just a peace of gasket that some offer for sale in order not to drop pan for whole thing.

Luckily it'* a peace of cake pan, it'* all there infront of ur eyes and easy to drop
