90 buick that won't shift outta first * for a co-worker *
Gents.
One of the guys I work with, his grandmother has a 90 buick with a 3800 and 54k on it. It sits cause it won't shift out of first. He would like to fix it as gas in his truck is killing him.
I searched an found things like solenoid or TCC problems. Could someone enlighten me as what can be done.
He tells me the fluid is red, as this is his grandmothers car he has no idea how long it was doing this. Is there something He or I can check or test to see if it is not a dead tranny.
Thanks

Check the TV or Throttle Valve Cable to the trans first...
To adjust all you do is depress the Tab and pull the cable all the way back towards the firewall... Then you wind the Throttle to Wide Open at which time you will hear the cable self adjust...
Beyond that, the problem could be in the valve body

I would do whats been suggested, but Id add to check the fluid properly(warmed up engine, running, level surface)
Theres also a possibility of bad fluid/clogged filter.
Give it a shot, my brother had a 96 cavalier that we thought the trans was toast.
We changed the fluid/filter, and cleared a code, all was good.
