it will crank over, starter is engaged and turning engine, no spark, has fuel pressure.

could be icm or crank sensor then. both are normally heat related failure, so warm you would have no spark and cold its fine

update; pulled ICM an had it tested came back as good. will clean its surfaces off add di grease and put it back together Friday. will check which wire brings power an check it before putting it back together. wish it would run long enough to get it home.

I thought that I posted this earlier but see no evidence of that so here it is again. For the old fart: Go to the easyautodiagnostics.com site and go to GM and Buick and 3.8L Ignition Control Module and Crank Sensor Test PartI and PatII. This site is a real trove of information. These tests will allow easier testing of the units and explains how they work. I got this site from someone else on this Forum and pass it along to you. I have not used it myself yet as it has been really cold here too and I am also in the old fart category and don't like working in the cold much anymore.

X2 agree , all they do is check resistance. When testing if your specs. is really close to your max tolerance. then replace it.

Update; okay I took the advise from justin, not to trust test results, and replaced ICM, car started an ran till it heated up about a mile then died, letting it cool half hr or so was able to restart it, and it would die in a couple blocks, the longer I waited for it to cool down the farther I could go finally I got it home.
now in the half dozen restarts it seemed I could hear a difference in the fuel pump running, before cranking, an it would start if it sounded one way, got home late so will check fuel pressure with a gauge an see if there is a problem there with low pressure seems idle or low throttle is when it died so I tried keeping higher rpms not sure if it made a difference, could feel stumble just before it dying.
Thanks jimmy544, I will get to the site and follow the steps, need some rest first. thanks for the help, now I can work on it at home instead of on the side of the road..

hook up the gauge so you can see it when it dies, maybe have something intermittent in the supply circuit. or sometimes the relays can heat up or pump when it goes can heat up and stop making enough pressure

If you have no spark when this happens, then if harness connections and wiring is ok, it has to be the crank sensor, since you installed a new ICM.........
