Cabin air filter
Check your cabin air filters. I was at the parts store getting something else and it reminded me to look I popped the cowl cover and mine was nasty and it was only a little over 2 years old. Just a heads up for some of the newbies on here and a reminder to the vets.
this is the filter out of the 99 parts car with 156k on it
this is out of the 204k 97 gs
i will share a pic of the fiancee'* filter when I get a chance to dig into it and look it over

hi those are some nasty filters! You wouldn't happen to know where the cabin filter is located on a 96 regal 4door with a 3800 series 2. Ive been having blower issues. I tried to buy one @ auto zone and they couldnt find one for this model.

Wow, that first one is crazy. I replaced mine about 2 weeks ago, and it wasn't real bad.. it looked like the one from your 97, without the big pieces. As far as I know, its the original filter.

If you have one, the access door will be on the windshield cowl screen panel, on the passenger side. Can't miss it if it'* there.

mine is to the right of the gas pedal. and its in 3 pieces. you need to keep the pedal floored in order to remove it.
