Default 1970 Buick Engine Wiring Questions

I am wanting to convert my 1970 Buick GS455 from external regulated alternator to internal regulated and also the distributor from point type to HEI. I am in need of help with eliminating the extra wiring and an explanation of what functions the "R" & "*" terminals on the starter solenoid, and how they factor into the elimination of any wiring for the external regulator and point type distributor.

Thanks, Dan

im not sure what the r and * stand for but all you need is the one that makes the starter crank. the hei is one larger one normally pink to the key on, probably went to the coil before, make sure there is no resistors. then the white should be a tach output.

The r terminal on the solenoid was an extra wire to provide 12 volts from the starter to the coil to help start the engine. The only time it had 12 volts was when you started and it switched back to 8/9 volts from the resistor wire from the ignition switch to the coil to keep from burning up the points. When we converted my sons 71 Cutlass 455 we ran a 12 gauge wire from the ignition switch straight through the bulkhead to the HEI and used another wire for the tach. Don't use the wire that is there now because it is resistor wire and you won't get a full 12 volts to the HEI.
