Default High beam headlight operation

How are the high-beam headlights supposed to be activated (and kept on) on my new-to-me 2000 LeSabre? I only get the "momentary" high beam flash when I pull back on the multifunction stalk on the left side of the steering column... as soon as I let up on the the stalk, it returns to its regular setting and the high beams pop back off. It won't "click" into place pulling back, and it won't push forward either (I've used some pressure but don't want to force it).

I'm guessing something inside the switch stalk is broken, but just wanted to check. I've been driving for over 20 years, so I don't think this problem is operator error... but who knows!

sounds like the mechanism is messed up, the newer ones go toward the dash and pull toward you is flash to pass. if yours is not that, it seems likely the switch is messed up

That'* kinda what I was thinking. I'll fiddle around with the "push away" (toward the dash) function of the switch if that is supposed to exist. It doesn't move that way at all currently, which seems strange that the particular stalk movement is just gone... unless something is stuck in there or something.

Yeah those are pretty much the only two options that I can think of.

If someone with a 2000+ Buick can verify the correct high beam switch operation, I'd appreciate it.

Your switch is similar to mine, and with mine I pull back to get them to come on, pushing forwards does nothing, I'll try to find a way to verify this with your switch for you.

Now comes the time when I must open my mouth and insert my foot.

Tonight I discovered it IS a pull-back switch. I just wasn't pulling back far enough to "click" the high beams on! This stalk travels farther than other cars I've had (even GM'*) and it takes a far amount of backward pressure to switch the lights over. The click is kinda quiet and doesn't always sound, but the high beams work fine after all.

Well Scotty I am glad to hear yours is working....
Sometimes the spring inside the multi function switch fails, and far too common unfortunately. The price at dealer for that switch is absurd..after market only for replacement is the only affordable replacement option.
I also wanted to post some good information from my recent thread on the high beam switch problem, 2000 Lesabre..

Glad you figured it out Scotty, thanks for updating us.
I forgot to mention the click.
The stalk does not push forwards though, if you want to flash them you just click on, then click off.

My flash-to-pass works fine without clicking... I just couldn't reach that click until I used more backwards pressure. Sounds like some others had the opposite problem, where high beams didn't flash at all UNTIL reaching the click. I'm guessing something may be worn out in my switch that requires the extra pressure, but that'* okay. It IS a 14yo car with almost 160k miles after all.
