Default Oil use ans whining issues

I have a 2008 Buick CXL with 18,000 miles. The engine is a V6 3800 III.

This car is great.

I have two issues one is I hear a whining sound coming from the engine compartment which gets louder as you give it gas. Not sure what that is.

The second issue is it uses oil. It is not smoking or leaking on the drive way. About every 5000 miles I have to add two quarts. I have had many cars and this seems strange. Thanks for the help!!!

gm says you can use a quart every 3k. my experience has been they do. i change my oil every 5k and its down over a quart every time.

as far as the noise you check the ps fluid level and see if its looks pinkish or bubbled

When sitting with the engine running but the car not moving, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop. If the whining is more pronounced it is the power steering pump. Check the oil level.

Our PS pumps tend to be whiners. They are sometimes confused with our superchargers too.

Power Steering fluid works hard and should be changed occasionally! (every year)
I use a veterinary syringe with rubber hose to suction out old fluid.
You want to hear your pump quieten down & run cooler smoother, add this into pump!
Protects seals no stiff steering when cold either! ( I buy 32 oz bottle good for 3 refills)
LUBEGARD Power Steering Fluid
I run full synthetic motor oils as well in the Park Ave. I remember how after a fresh oil change w/ filter I could clearly hear some valve clicking going on.
I added this and withing 1 minute the engine'* valve friction was removed and went completely quiet. Now I use it at every oil change. Just got 35.4 mpg in the mountains with a car that should get 25-28 mpg on highway. Oil stays way cooler too!

Derek You are welcome. Try it works as advertised period.
On my last v-8 car that had the original TH-350C transmission, I used their
"RED" additive as well and was still running great with 250,000 miles on it.
I changed my GM trans fluid with the DEX6 & lubegard additive & will service at 35,000 mile intervals.
Smoother shifts & once again way cooler fluid temps.

I just opened a new thread with a transmission question. Change trans fluid?
